Spice Stellar 509 – A Decent Smartphone
Spice has launched a new device in its Stellar series and this new device is called Spice Stellar 509. This device has recently been made available via shopping sites. This is a large screen device which offers a quad core processor and decent camera at a low price tag. The device comes at a price point where we saw some new additions recently and the competition is going to be tough.
The spice stellar 509 is a large device mainly due to its 5 inch display but also due to the thick bezel it carries around its display. It has a simple rectangular design. There is a lot of space above and below the display which adds to its height. The device can be handled with one hand but you can’t access the entire screen easily if you do so. The weight of this device doesn’t help much with that either. The quality of material used is decent and is better than what we are used to see on low end devices.
The 5 inch display is the most unimpressive bit about this device. While we don’t have any complaints against the size and display technology, the display resolution is very low. It has a resolution of just 480 x 854 on a display this big. The low resolution ruins the large display of its benefits as all the content appears to be magnified and you don’t get any extra workspace. Also small texts are barely readable and you have to zoom in every time you open full versions of websites. We would have preferred at least a qHD display here.
Rest of the device hardware isn’t that bad. It gets a quad core processor with clock speeds up to 1.3 GHz. They haven’t specified the make and model of the chipset. It has got 1 GB of RAM. It has got 4 GB of internal storage and support for micro SD cards. You get the usual connectivity options. It supports Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, micro USB and GPS. It supports dual SIM cards. The device is powered by a 2000 mAh battery.
It gets an 8 megapixel primary camera with LED flash. The camera can give you decent shots in well-lit conditions. There is some noise in dark parts of the image but you can live with that. A filter or two can give you images worth sharing on social networking sites.
The device runs android 4.2 out of the box which is mostly stock except for some preinstalled apps. These apps include Spice Cloud, Opera Mini, Getit, OLX and Greetzap. You can disable these apps from the settings if you don’t need them. The device runs smooth thanks to the quad core processor and plenty of RAM. The device is available for 8K through the online retailer. We would suggest its device for its decent camera and hardware but the low resolution display is a let-down.
